A man who prefers his actions to speak, Jagdish Mithu Chanrai is guided by his unwavering principles. A successful and ambitious businessman, he is equally known as a generous humanitarian and philanthropist. He has supported his family businesses for over 50 years (since 1968) and has assisted in growing the family’s resources over time. JM Chanrai is well-known for his penchant for analysis – be it in business, investments, or philanthropy.

As the brand ambassador for Caring Capitalism® for the past 30 years (since 1989), he feels that one of his purposes for pursuing success in business is to fight for causes he believes in, like eye health. And only by excelling in business, can he then establish his philosophy of Caring Capitalism®. His wife Bharati and their 5 daughters are all wholehearted proponents of Caring Capitalism® as well. He has seen this perspective on living bring his extended family together to fight for common causes as well. It has been a catalyst for family building.

JM Chanrai believes anyone can practice caring: it does not matter who you are or what you do, you can make a difference. Any small action, donation of time, or both, can make a change.

JM Chanrai is now guiding his family and team of professionals to take over various aspects of his business and philanthropy. Today, he divides his time between his family, business and philanthropic interests in Dubai, India, Nigeria, and the USA.

1968

Graduated HR College of Commerce and
Economics with a Bachelor of Commerce.

1970

Married his childhood sweetheart, Bharati. She has been a great friend, supporter, and confidante to him for more than 55 years. They moved to Nigeria the same year and lived there for 12 years.

JM Chanrai continues his strong ties to Nigeria to this day. He loves Nigeria. The nation gave him and his family a good life with friends among the expat, Indian, and Nigerian communities. He believes in respecting the land which helps you and, in return, he has always been welcomed by Nigerians (a caring and kind people in his experience). This bond has made him give back to help the country in a meaningful way.

1984

Met Mother Theresa. JM Chanrai met Mother Theresa through a colleague. He recalls her as ”beautiful” and he enjoyed being with her. She told him, “Mr. Chanrai, I think you’re enjoying charities.” He prayed with her in a chapel – it was a “glorious feeling” for him. He has maintained close ties to other religious figures as well: Sai Baba of Shirdi was his guru and Satya Saibaba. They all promoted serving the poor and needy. JM Chanrai believes in destiny and that we all come into this world for a reason: his is to do as much good as he can.

1989

At 42, he started his involvement with philanthropy, which he learned from his parents. In Nigeria, he and his friends started healthcare with professionals from India. To build on this start, he and other like-minded patrons established TCF Nigeria in 1992 to formally help the country. Now, TCF Nigeria is partnering with the government and international agencies in eye care, health and water. In 2019, TCF and other supporters furthered their commitment to help cure avoidable blindness for people in need by building a state-of-the-art eye care hospital in Abuja.

1999

Joined as Trustee of the Jaslok Hospital and Research Center in Mumbai; one of the first multi-specialty hospitals in India which was established by the Chanrai family in 1973. He is also a Trustee of several other trusts in India, the U.K. and Nigeria.

2000

Mission for Vision established by him along with other partners and patrons. In the late 1980s-90s to cure avoidable blindness – as everyone has the right to sight – JM Chanrai and his friends began work in Coimbatore with Sankara Eye Hospital and then scaled up the partnership for greater outreach across the country. Mission for Vision then furthered their work.

2006

2006 – Seth Mithu Chanrai, his father, passed away in India. His father was a great man whom he loved dearly and who was admired by all. His parents led by example and taught the family many things, most importantly of all to give to the less fortunate and to pray.

2015

JM Chanrai was honored by JP Morgan Award as one of 31 inspiring philanthropists globally. He was asked to be one of three speakers at a small function they held in Singapore for this event.
